LO2 Task 3: Planning a Radio show

A.) Intended Radio Station/Broadcaster
I will be creating a 5 minute radio show for Sheffield live radio. They are a community radio station that caters to uderserved audiences with shows like Africabeat and The local talent show. All of the shows that are broadcast on Sheffield Live are considered to be Niche.

B.) Target Audience
The target audience for our show would be 14-25 year olds because these are the ages that are generally more interested in games. It will not be specifically targeted at a certain gender so as not to discriminate and limit our audience down to one specific gender. In terms of NRS (National Readership Survey) The target audience would be in the ABC1 category because they would need access to the internet in order to be able to access the podcast in the first place.

C.)Content Plan
The content of the show will include two game reviews per episode with an ad break between certain segments it will also include a section where we ask for the opinions of listeners regarding the game that was discussed previously. There will also be a news section about upcoming games and gaming news.

Finley: Yo! We’re going to be talking about some sick games, Need For Speed Most Wanted, Farcry 4 and call of duty go check them out on all concoles!
Bailey: What’s up everyone, its Bailey were going to be talking about accessories to help play CoD and upcoming games
Dom: Go check out Most wanted,
(SFX sound of a car from most wanted)

Bailey: Check out the new set of rims on these fresh cars like the Bugatti Veyron, pagani zonda and koenigsegg
Finley: Man! Check out all the upgrades you can get from winning races and even losing!
Dom: you wanna know whats bad guys? Cant change cars when you’re in a chase so you could be stuck in a 1 litre and cant get into a fast whip so you can hardly get away
Bailey: Cant wait for the new need for speed!
Dom: Completed it
Finley: It only came out yesterday?
Dom: Err! Moving on!
Bailey: Anyone been on GTA on the new consoles with first person?
Finley:  Yeah but it’s only out for new consoles and they cost a bomb
Dom: Who plays Xbox 360 anymore though?
Finley: You’re joking right? Loads of people! People who don’t want to pay a fortune!
Dom: Moving onto accessories for CoD where we’ve been testing out the new modded controller from rapidmodz
Finley: The controller we’ve received allows you to do a multiple of things whilst in the game, like dropshot, quick reload,
Bailey: quickscope and rapid-fire with the controller lighting up with bullet buttons
Dom: Now, talking about the new Farcry4! We’ve got jack one of our listeners who have called in to talk about his experience of the game soon!
Bailey: The new valley of the Yetis DLC is out now for Playstation and Xbox!
Finley: What’s the story behind it? Is it worth the money?
Dom: It offers a supernatural twist with a threat of massive Yetis with the enemy after a secret in the valley.
Bailey: And it’s only £12 with it offering more storyline and more things to do so it’s worth the money in my opinion.
Finley: Anyone heard of the keys to kyrat for playstation?
Dom: What’s that?
Finley: it’s where you can give a friend who doesn’t own the game a chance to play co-op for 2 hours.
Dom: There have been loads of patches to the game though for all consoles and pc.
Finley: We have our first caller on the line! Jack! Are you there?
Jack: I’m here! Am I really on?!
Bailey: Jack! What’s your opinion on farcry 4?
Jack: It has a good storyline and better gameplay to the one before, but there’s loads of problems like the stupid hand glider and grappling hook which is bad to use and hard to control. You cant even drive the cars cause the handling is that bad and the shooting accuracy is terrible
Bailey: Driving is easy on the game?
Jack: It’s not! I crash every time!
Bailey: I don’t, use the manual
Finley: Okay hahah! Time to leave it there thanks for calling in jack!
Dom: That’s all we have time for; I hope you’ve enjoyed listening today
Finley: Make sure you tune in next week where we will be talking about more games and doing our new competition
Bailey: Feel free to comment on our podcast online today thanks for listening, goodbye!

F.)Production Schedule

G.)Relevant Legal and/or ethical issues
Because our programme is broadcast before the watershed we must be careful not to include any offensive content that may be damaging to younger viewers. Our Radio Station also must have a PRS license in order to include music by artists in the show. Also we must abide by broadcast codes set by Ofcom, this includes things such as 'Material that might seriously impair the physical, mental or physiological development of people under the age of 18 must not be broadcast. There is also a code that talks about the use of offensive language that says ' The most offensive language must not be broadcast before the watershed (in the case of television) or when children are particularly likely to be listening (in the case of radio.'

H.)Proposed Scheduling Time
Our podcast will be available on Fridays at 7:00 PM because alot of teenagers will have finished school and adults will have finished at work by then.
Any questions that we have asked the local community will be asked during the week on social media etc.

LO1 Task 2 -Analysing a talk and music radio show

The Local talent show

Running Order: The running order of the local talent show is that they have a 5+ minute advertisement section followed by a short talking section at the beginning of the show. The talking section will be followed by a song, in between each song there may be either a short talking section or an advertisement break. There will also be a short interviewing section where they talk to a local band who's songs they are playing on the show on that particular day.

DJ/Presenters: The presenters of the local talent show speak in an informal manner, because it fits the mood and style of the show whether they are speaking to the audience or to the local bands they have in as guests their style and mode of address stays consistent. They help the bands that they have on as guests by talking about that bands new album or single on the show. One or two of the presenters speak colloquially during the show.

Content: The local talent show mostly showcases local bands by having them gust on the show and by playing their songs on the show to help advertise the band. They also interview the bands that they have on the show and ask them questions about gigs and new albums and singles etc. From the part of the show I have listened to I can see that The Local Talent Show includes a wide variety of content and music genres on their show since indie music does not have a defined style or genre.

Target Audience:The target audience of The Local Talent Show is from teenagers aged 16 to 25 years old because they are the people that are more likely to want to listen to indie music which is the kind of bands that are featured on The Local Talent Show.

LO1 Task 1: Investigating a radio staiton

A.) Programme Types - Sheffield Live is a community radio station that caters to an underserved audience. They are owned by Commedia Sheff ltd, who supports community radio and TV stations. One of the programmes Sheffield live produce is 'Communities Live' which is described as 'Different groups of volunteers produce and present the show each day, providing a wide mix of styles and subjects for discussion: local and national politics; music and art from Sheffield; community events, and much more.' They do this in order to make a By the people, for the people kind of how since it is produced and presented by volunteers from the community. Different shows on the station are Sheffield Live: Jukebox, Sheffield Meltdown, Deep Groove, Africabeat and the 'Local Talent Show'.

B.) Genres - Sheffield Live broadcasts many different genres of radio shows for example talk shows such as Communities Live where they talk about a variety of topics ranging from local issues to politics. Another genre is indie music shows such as The Local Talent Show where local bands and artists are showcased. There is also just a music show like Sheffield Live which plays music from the 1950's to the 2000's and takes requests. They also have chat shows such as Sheffield Uprising which includes a variety of genres including music, news coverage and talk show.

C.) Audience profile -Sheffield Live radio particularly aim their station at people from areas of Sheffield like: City centre, Nether Edge, Broomhill, Crookes, Walkley, Burngreave, Manor, Arbourthorne, Gleadless and Darnell. The shows that Sheffield Live broadcast cater to a wide range of ages from teenagers to elderly people. They also cater to a variety of ethnicity's with shows like 'Africabeat' and 'Latino times' . Altogether Sheffield Live cater to underserved audiences with their shows. I have created an audience profile for 'Local Talent Show'.

D.) Production process - In terms of production, each show broadcast by Sheffield Live is produced by the presenters and a production team which have to work together effectively in order to produce their show, different shows may promote or advertise each other if they share a common topic or presenter etc.

E.) Market share - The main competitors to Sheffield Live are stations like Hallam FM and BBC Radio Sheffield who cater to a more general, mainstream audience and, as such will draw in more listeners and be more well heard of than Sheffield Live. However they will stand out form their competitors because they cater to an underserved audience who are not served by the other stations like Hallam FM or Radio Sheffield so anyone that is not interested by what Hallam or Radio Sheffield have to offer will probably be interested in Sheffield Live. Survey results say that Sheffield Live has a weekly audience reach of 11% which means that every week about 32,000 listen to Sheffield Live every week.
